PIAA Football State Championships Nice site for in-game updates and final scores. WPIAL won't sweep thanks to Steelton, but T. Jefferson crushed Garnet Valley 28-3. Hershey PredictionsHere it is, my next to last (or possibly last) football entry for the year. Calpreps has made their Pennsylvania predictions (you have to scroll to the bottom of the page).
If the WPIAL sweeps, it will be the first time ever (I think they've gone 3-4 a couple of times). It's also the first time that 4 undefeated WPIAL teams have gone to Hershey. Wednesday, December 12, 2007

Ch-ch-changesThe high school athletic tableau will look a little different around here come fall. Both the Suburban One and Philadelphia Catholic Leagues are changing their organization. Lansdale Catholic left the Pioneer Athletic Conference for the PCL, and North Penn is moving from the SOL National Conference to the Continental Conference. Here are the new line-ups: Some comments from the Carlisle Sentinel Hershey 2007 - PIAA football finalsHere are some articles about the Pennsylvania High School Football finalists: I think I have everyone there. If that's not enough, read the high school football articles on Pennlive.com. I will try to post the Calpreps predictions sometime this week. Saturday, December 08, 2007
Pennsylvania High School Football's "Elite Eight"It's taken me a couple of weeks to get over the end of Suburban One high school football, but things are wrapping up now. By sometime later today, we will be down to 8 teams left playing high school football in Pennsylvania, and things will be settled next Friday and Saturday in Hershey. Garnet Valley High School ensured that at least one District One team will be represented next weekend. Ridley has a tough one today against Parkland at J. Birney Crum Stadium in Allentown. I didn't see a score on the Pittsburgh Central Catholic - Harrisburg game from last night yet. I figure PCC won, but I don't ahve confirmation yet. The Poop is an interesting blog about NFL football, women and crime (as best I can tell). I found it when I came across this article about Edward Anderton and did a subsequent image search for Jocelyn Kirsch. Will Bunch's Attytood blog entry about Anderton and Kirsch has one of the best commentaries I've seen about the whole mess. Some more high school football stories: Friday, November 23, 2007
Neshaminy 35 - North Penn 0Thus endeth the North Penn football season. A 9-3 record is certainly respectable, but probably not where everyone expected them to end up after their early season success. As Coach Beck termed the game in Heartbreak again for North Penn, it was "extremely disappointing." Since CB-South succumbed to Downingtown West, Neshaminy is left as the sole Suburban One National team facing Ridley tonight.Still, North Penn is watching from the stands and waiting for next year, just like 2-11 Truman after their victory over Conwell-Egan. At least Truman got to finish up with a win. Friday, November 16, 2007
Well, the Inquirer finally managed to post their picks today, under the title Eating crow over some errant picks. Like me, they went with all of the home picks, although, I have to admit I only picked Neshaminy to avoid jinxing North Penn. Unfortunately, I won't be at the game tonight, but I will be listening on WNPV 1440. If there is a next week at Ridley (although I heard a rumor that the 3rd & 4th rounds will be at neutral sites), I am planning to be there. Thursday, November 15, 2007
PIAA DISTRICT 1 AAAA FOOTBALL PLAYOFFSRound 2I didn't see any predictions in the Inquirer this week, but here are the games: Downingtown West at Central Bucks South, 7 Downingtown East at W.C. Henderson, 7 Glen Mills at Ridley, 7 North Penn at Neshaminy, 7 Going to Calpreps, the predictions are: Downingtown West at Central Bucks South, Prediction: CB South 34-28 Downingtown East at W.C. Henderson, Prediction: Henderson 28-7 Glen Mills at Ridley, Prediction: Ridley 21-17 North Penn at Neshaminy, Prediction: Neshaminy 28-21 I am afraid to predict a North Penn win at this point, so I will predict that all the home teams will win. There has been a lot of talk about the number of Ches-Mont teams in the playoffs. It even shows up in the Harrisburg Patriot-News. There will still be at least one Ches-Mont team left on Saturday, but it will probably only be one, and the remaining team will likely fall to CB South on November 23.
Well, it's taken me a few days to post, but here are the results for the first round of the PIAA District 1 Football Playoffs. Interboro 6 - Ridley 34 Conestoga 20 - West Chester Henderson 21 Glen Mills 36 - Perkiomen Valley 26 Wissahickon 9 - North Penn 36 Haverford High 7 - C.B. South 34 Upper Dublin 7 - Neshaminy 42 Downingtown East 14 - Souderton 13 Hatboro-Horsham 28 - Downingtown West 49 Both the Philadelphia Inquirer and Calpreps missed the upsets. I guessed right that Perk Valley was vulnerable, and I was right that Henderson was vulnerable - Conestoga just couldn't pull it out. North Penn and D'town West dominated, which I didn't expect. The Souderton loss threw everyone for a loop (including the Souderton team). Now we are on the cusp of Round 2. Friday, November 09, 2007
PIAA District 1 AAAA Football PlayoffsRound 1Philadelphia Inquirer Predictions 15th seed Interboro (8-2) at second seed Ridley (9-0) Pick: Ridley, 19-13. Calpreps predictions: Monday, November 05, 2007

PIAA District One Football PlayoffsThe Week 10 results are up on the District One Football Info page. It looks like North Penn will host a tough Wissahickon team that had to beat Upper Dublin Friday night to get in to the playoffs. The Pennsylvania Eastern AAAA Football Tournament bracket isn't filled in yet on the District One Football site. The District 1 AAAA Football seeding is as follows: Here are the PIAA Football Past Champions while we are waiting for the 2007 champion to emerge. Saturday, November 03, 2007

I was exposed to molecular cooking via a "petite experiment" in a restaurant in Montreal. Apparently, molecular cooking is the application of molecular gastronomy to cooking. If that is still not clear, think about Caesar Salad Pudding (okay, they called it mousse, but it was as much a pudding as a mousse). Wednesday, October 31, 2007

Dark Days Indeed There was no joy in Montgomeryville... On another note, has anyone else noticed the similarity in the refrain's of Genesis' "Land of Confusion" This is the world we live in and the Callings' "Our Lives?" Cause these are the days worth living This has been bugging me for several months now (obligatory straight line here). Also, don't you hate it when you make little typo's in blog posts that completely blow up your cultural references? Wednesday, October 17, 2007
Super 25 prep football regional rankings - USATODAY.comNorth Penn #4 in the northeast. BUT - there are only 3 teams from the Northeast in the Super 25. There are 5 from the Midwest; 5 from the West - AND 12 from the South! That's right, 2 teams on the Super 25 didn't make the Southern region top 10.I realize polls are always have subjectivity, but something seems amiss with USA Today's polling method. Are Byrnes & Independence Charlotte really better than North Penn? Are they better than Mount Carmel in Chicago (alma mater to Donovan McNabb & Simeon Rice) or Birmingham in Lake Balboa, CA? I found the Calpreps web site, and here are their projections for North Penn vs. Byrnes: PROJECT A MATCHUP at North Penn (Lansdale, PA) [2007] North Penn (Lansdale, PA) 62, [2007] Byrnes (Florence, SC) 0 at Byrnes (Florence, SC) [2007] North Penn (Lansdale, PA) 62, [2007] Byrnes (Florence, SC) 0 at neutral site [2007] North Penn (Lansdale, PA) 62, [2007] Byrnes (Florence, SC) 0 Tuesday, October 16, 2007

Redskins lose battle of unbeatens (phillyBurbs.com) | Courier Times Sports Can Neshaminy beat North Penn on Saturday? Or will the November 2 match-up between North Penn & CB South determine the Suburban One League National Conference football champion? I went to the first half of this game, and I left at half-time with Neshaminy holding at 14-0 lead. When North Penn was beating Abington 28-0 at the half on Saturday night, I refused to leave until the end of the 3rd quarter. As we were walking out, Abington scored their lone touchdown of the contest, and the score ended at 35-8 in North Penn's favor.
Where are all the fans? (phillyBurbs.com) | Courier Times Sports Semi-interesting commentary. I've been to a few high school football & basketball contests over the last few years, and I've seen a variety of attendance levels. Certainly, once the playoffs come, attendance really picks up. I was at North Penn hosting Interboro last year, and there was a pretty good crowd for a cold November night. When a contest really captures the attention of 2 communities, fans will turn out. There were over 5,000 people at the North Penn-Souderton football game. Neshaminy-CB South was heavily attended by both home team & visiting fans. There are just too many things to do in the Philadelphia suburbs to consistently draw a big crowd. Add to the mix that many games are televised over the cable or the Internet, and it becomes a tough sell. Even so, high school football and basketball is one of the best entertainment values around, and I see families with young children at every game. If you are reading this, and you haven't been to a high school contest recently, go out and see one. Friday, October 12, 2007
Police news for Oct. 9 (phillyBurbs.com) | Intelligencer "Truck rolls down hill at high school" in Towamencin (last item). Shouldn't it be a law that delivery trucks at schools have to chock their tires? I saw the fence on Monday, and I wondered what the heck had happened. We were just lucky there were no kids around when the truck was rolling.
Offenses figure to rule gridiron | Philadelphia Inquirer | 10/12/2007 This Souderton / Hatboro-Horsham football preview points out the high flying offenses of both teams, so the contrarian in me has to predict a defensive duel. Of course, Don Beideman goes on to predict a 24-14 Souderton win, which isn't exactly big scoring for either team. I saw Souderton vs. North Penn and part of Hatboro-Horsham vs. Council Rock North. I too think that Souderton will have the edge tonight. Thursday, October 11, 2007

NP Soph's 22 - HH Soph's 12The North Penn Sophomore team defeated the Hatboro-Horsham Sophomore football team in a rather poorly played match-up this afternoon. North Penn seemed to be basking in the sun more than keeping their heads in the game, and, although there were some flashes, Hatboro-Horsham just didn't have the horses to overtake the Knights.Next Monday - CB South.
The Reporter Blogs: Local Sports Beat: Art Class - I have a whole collection of stuff to post on Scoreless Tie, and all I can come up with is this lame analogy between high school football and carnival art creations? Oh, well. Maybe later. Monday, October 01, 2007
North Penn Sophomores 30 - Souderton Sophonores 14The 10th grade football team at North Penn faced down their nemesis Souderton today. Over the past few years this has been the game the soph's couldn't come up with, but today they came out and dominated Souderton to a much greater degree than the score would indicate. North Penn had a touchdown called back that would have opened up the game to 36-6, and Souderton was able to capitalize on the "inadvertant whistle" to pull within 16. That was the last time Souderton touched the ball as the North Penn held the ball to the end of the game, letting time run out with the ball at the Souderton 10. Next week, Hatboro-Horsham. SCORELESS TIE!!!!!From Local schedule for September 21 - Intelligencer Sports BTW, an athletic contest where neither team scores is not the reason I named this blog Scoreless Tie, but the real reason only makes any sense to me. And it doesn't even make a whole lot of sense to me, so I won't try to explain. Thursday, September 20, 2007
NFHS | National High School Sports Record Book - Longest field goal in PA was 64 yards in 2003. See page 81 on football part 1 listing. North Penn 38 - Pennridge 21Not the Knights best football of the year, but they got the job done. The most exciting part of the game was Brandon McManus North Penn record 54 yard field goal. North Penn took a 14 point lead in the 1st quarter, and Pennridge could never get all the way back in the game. The Rams got to within 10 with under 3 minutes left, but the North Penn 2nd string was able to punch in another TD to reach the final score. As I commented on Kevin Cooney's Blitz column from Sept. 20, everyone will be gunning for North Penn the rest of the way. The big game coming up looks like it will be Neshaminy at CB South on October 12. This will set up the North Penn at Neshaminy game on October 20 and maybe the regular season finale, North Penn at CB South on November 2. Tuesday, September 18, 2007

Some stuff from a busy Saturday Well, MusicMatch Jukebox is history. I am using RealPlayer right now, but I don't know what I will do in the long run. I am still looking to copy files off of the dead laptop hard drive. Here's a cheap 2.5 to 3.5 hard drive adapter at Amazon. I also found an article about how to get data from a laptop drive. I am still a little confused about the power supply for the laptop drive. I don't know if my USB to HD converter is going to work or not. National Prep Football Poll – Preseason - Well, well, well - no Suburban One National teams on the poll. The top PA team on the poll is Central Catholic in Pittsburgh (the only PA team in the top 25 nationally.) The top PA District 1 AAAA teams in the poll are Ridley and Downingtown West. Will this be the year a team that is not in Suburban One National can survive in District 1? Will Easton or Liberty still be playing at the end of November? If it's Easton, can they beat Phillipsburg on Thanksgiving and win a playoff game on Saturday? It's the 2nd day of 2-a-days in Pennsylvania, and anything is still possible. Thursday, July 26, 2007
It all started with an e-mail. I got an e-mail (that I believe was embedded 5 layers deep in forwarded message attachments) that warm water is better than cold. It was found false by Snopes in Drinking Cold Water Causes Cancer. But I looked up other stuff anyway: All this heart attack talk got me wondering about the statin/Omega 3 combo that I currently take. Omega-3 Fatty Acid May Protect Heart seems to show that in my situation, it may not make much difference. Dariush Mozaffarian, MD, MPH, DrPH, of the Harvard School of Public Health writes, "We must curb our infatuation with downstream risk factors and treatments, and focus on the fundamental risk factors for cardiovascular disease: dietary habits, smoking, and physical activity." I'm looking for something to use after MusicMatch is gone. Plus I have an HD from a dead laptop with their WMA's on it. Here is one post I found: Musicmatch - alternative please - MoneySavingExpert.com Forums. It looks like Music Exchange might be an alternative. This review of MP3 software isn't bad, but I'd like to see something better. Brainboost gave me no answer to "what is the best software for organizing and playing mp3's on your computer". Webtech Geek has a list of players with links. About.com has their usual crap. Still don't know what I'm going to do about replacimg MusicMatch to avoid migrating to Yahoo!, but I did find a way to get the DRM WMA's off the laptop with the dead MoBo. PC World's article Hassle-Free PC: New Uses for Old Hard Drives linked me to the PCMS IDE TO USB 2.0 DRIVE 2.5"/ 3.5"/ 5.25" ADAPTER PC/MAC at PC Microstore. Clean up your PC: How to fully de-gunk a PC of Crapware by ZDNet's George Ou -- One of the most hated things on the Personal Computer is Crapware. It slows your PC down to a craw, often causes instability and crashes, eats up valuable screen real-estate, and may even border on Malware. I started on this topic a few months ago with a partial solution but it wasn’t the total solution [...] Pwn your own phone:Dell selling Nokia phones - bad news for carriers by ZDNet's Marc Orchant -- Stefan at intomobile points to new listings on the Dell website showing unlocked Nokia handsets. This is a big deal. One of the stumbling blocks Nokia (and other high-end handset manufacturers) faces is getting distribution for these devices in the company stores operated by AT&T and T-Mobile (the two largest GSM carriers here in the US). I always treasure the look on the faces of the young people working in the local T-Mobile store when I walk in with a new unlocked Nokia handheld multimedia computer. I went to Fertilizer Latin America 2007 in Miami over the last couple of days. It was kind of a nightmare trip because flights (in particular US Airways) delayed due to the bad weather in the northeastern US on March 16 & 17. I did have a nice dinner at the Globe Cafe & Bar in Coral Gables. My co-worker & I split a Pan Seared Wasabi Yellowfin Tuna with a Yellowfin Tuna special that was on the menu. He had a mojito, which he thoroughly enjoyed, while I simply had a pint of Guinness. The highlight of my trip was sitting behind Vai Sikahema on the flight back to Philadelphia. I overheard him tell another passenger that he was in Miami to see his son play in a baseball tournament. He was very friendly and personable. In an almost cliche moment, he had milk and cookies for his snack on the plane (as opposed to my degenerate Diet Pepsi & M&M's). More Vai Sikahema - Vai on Wikipedia Vai's pro football stat's.
