Dark Days Indeed

There was no joy in Montgomeryville...
North Penn's varsity football squad went down with a whimper against Neshaminy (31-7) on Saturday and the JV followed suit this afternoon (30-12). The game against hapless (and winless) Truman on Friday night should help morale, but doesn't reveal much about how the Nov. 2 game against Central Bucks South will go. Calpreps projects a 50-0 win against Truman at Crawford Stadium, and a 28-21 North Penn win at CB South. But Calpreps also projected a Neshaminy win at CB South, and we all know how wrong that proved to be. The new rankings reflecting the North Penn loss aren't out yet, so we have a day or two to wait and see how far the fall was. Of course, playoff seedings are more important than rankings, and more importantly, most teams that win the state go undefeated.

On another note, has anyone else noticed the similarity in the refrain's of Genesis' "Land of Confusion"

This is the world we live in
And these are the hands we're given
Use them and lets start trying
To make it a place worth living in.

and the Callings' "Our Lives?"

Cause these are the days worth living
These are the years we're given
And these are the moments
These are the times
Let's make the best out of our lives

This has been bugging me for several months now (obligatory straight line here). Also, don't you hate it when you make little typo's in blog posts that completely blow up your cultural references?

Super 25 prep football regional rankings - USATODAY.com

North Penn #4 in the northeast. BUT - there are only 3 teams from the Northeast in the Super 25. There are 5 from the Midwest; 5 from the West - AND 12 from the South! That's right, 2 teams on the Super 25 didn't make the Southern region top 10.

I realize polls are always have subjectivity, but something seems amiss with USA Today's polling method. Are Byrnes & Independence Charlotte really better than North Penn? Are they better than Mount Carmel in Chicago (alma mater to Donovan McNabb & Simeon Rice) or Birmingham in Lake Balboa, CA?

I found the Calpreps web site, and here are their projections for North Penn vs. Byrnes:

PROJECT A MATCHUP

at North Penn (Lansdale, PA)
[2007] North Penn (Lansdale, PA) 62, [2007] Byrnes (Florence, SC) 0

at Byrnes (Florence, SC)
[2007] North Penn (Lansdale, PA) 62, [2007] Byrnes (Florence, SC) 0

at neutral site
[2007] North Penn (Lansdale, PA) 62, [2007] Byrnes (Florence, SC) 0

Sophomore scores and records don't mean much other than to players, coaches & parents, but one can always hope that it foreshadows a varsity football victory.

Redskins lose battle of unbeatens (phillyBurbs.com) | Courier Times Sports Can Neshaminy beat North Penn on Saturday? Or will the November 2 match-up between North Penn & CB South determine the Suburban One League National Conference football champion?

I went to the first half of this game, and I left at half-time with Neshaminy holding at 14-0 lead. When North Penn was beating Abington 28-0 at the half on Saturday night, I refused to leave until the end of the 3rd quarter. As we were walking out, Abington scored their lone touchdown of the contest, and the score ended at 35-8 in North Penn's favor.

Where are all the fans? (phillyBurbs.com) | Courier Times Sports Semi-interesting commentary. I've been to a few high school football & basketball contests over the last few years, and I've seen a variety of attendance levels. Certainly, once the playoffs come, attendance really picks up. I was at North Penn hosting Interboro last year, and there was a pretty good crowd for a cold November night.

When a contest really captures the attention of 2 communities, fans will turn out. There were over 5,000 people at the North Penn-Souderton football game. Neshaminy-CB South was heavily attended by both home team & visiting fans.

There are just too many things to do in the Philadelphia suburbs to consistently draw a big crowd. Add to the mix that many games are televised over the cable or the Internet, and it becomes a tough sell. Even so, high school football and basketball is one of the best entertainment values around, and I see families with young children at every game.

If you are reading this, and you haven't been to a high school contest recently, go out and see one.

Police news for Oct. 9 (phillyBurbs.com) | Intelligencer "Truck rolls down hill at high school" in Towamencin (last item). Shouldn't it be a law that delivery trucks at schools have to chock their tires? I saw the fence on Monday, and I wondered what the heck had happened. We were just lucky there were no kids around when the truck was rolling.

Offenses figure to rule gridiron | Philadelphia Inquirer | 10/12/2007
This Souderton / Hatboro-Horsham football preview points out the high flying offenses of both teams, so the contrarian in me has to predict a defensive duel. Of course, Don Beideman goes on to predict a 24-14 Souderton win, which isn't exactly big scoring for either team.

I saw Souderton vs. North Penn and part of Hatboro-Horsham vs. Council Rock North. I too think that Souderton will have the edge tonight.

NP Soph's 22 - HH Soph's 12

The North Penn Sophomore team defeated the Hatboro-Horsham Sophomore football team in a rather poorly played match-up this afternoon. North Penn seemed to be basking in the sun more than keeping their heads in the game, and, although there were some flashes, Hatboro-Horsham just didn't have the horses to overtake the Knights.

Next Monday - CB South.

The Reporter Blogs: Local Sports Beat: Art Class - I have a whole collection of stuff to post on Scoreless Tie, and all I can come up with is this lame analogy between high school football and carnival art creations? Oh, well. Maybe later.

North Penn Sophomores 30 - Souderton Sophonores 14

The 10th grade football team at North Penn faced down their nemesis Souderton today. Over the past few years this has been the game the soph's couldn't come up with, but today they came out and dominated Souderton to a much greater degree than the score would indicate. North Penn had a touchdown called back that would have opened up the game to 36-6, and Souderton was able to capitalize on the "inadvertant whistle" to pull within 16. That was the last time Souderton touched the ball as the North Penn held the ball to the end of the game, letting time run out with the ball at the Souderton 10. Next week, Hatboro-Horsham.
