North Penn Blogging

In honor of my older son starting his first (sophomore) year at North Penn High School, I did a search for North Penn blogs. And besides me. I found some other interesting stuff. Like his new principal. More later (maybe)

Later: North Penn should be showing up a lot in the PA Blitz Blog with the football team dominating their 1st 3 games. We'll have to see if Isabelle let's them get in this week's game. And then there's the intriguing and evanescent Madison McGraw and her Chicks Dig Books web site. Her blogspot site is the other above, although it's kind of "now you see it, now you don't".

Friday Five

1. When was the last time you laughed? This morning. I was listening to NPR's interview with Weird Al Yankovic.

2. Who was the last person you had an argument with? Probably one of my kids.

3. Who was the last person you emailed? According to Outlook, a bunch of my co-workers.

4. When was the last time you bathed? This morning.

5. What was the last thing you ate? Yogurt

Does MS Exchange drive you crazy? It tends to make me nuts. Periodically, everyone has trouble accessing out server. And what's with OWA? I suppose I could take an online course, but I don't know how much it would really help. There are web sites, like www.msexchange.org, but unless there is an article titled, "How to run through your Linksys router into Comcast HSI and get on an Exchange Server 5.5 system using Outlook 2000," I'm not sure how much help it will be. O'Reilly publishes books like Managing Microsoft Exchange Server. Of course, the closest copy I can find in a library is in Pittsburgh.

Homestar Runner

Homestar is getting a lot of press lately. Today, the Cincinnati Equirer published an article. On June 23, there was this article in Wired News. It got this response the next day. In between, there was a Homestar article in the St. Paul Pioneer Press, the Colorado Daily tells you how to find out more about Homestar Runner and other easter eggs and Boston's Weekly Dig gives a blurb, too. Oh, yeah, there was a TechTV Cat's Clicks for Homestar, too. I guess Homestar makes you do crazy things, eh, Cat?

I liked this ThirdAge article on improving you metabolism for weight control. I also liked Chad Tackett's Home/Travel Strength Training Exercises that were referenced in the article.

This probably wouldn't get blogged here, except I haven't written anything for 2 weeks. Third Age has a column called Tech Insider (link is to the archive). Some of the articles looked interesting, although I haven't read them yet.

Weeelllllll... This paragraph changed as I wrote it. FatWallet had a thread about some good prices on those tiny pc boxes. I was going to link to a vendor mentioned in the thread (not the original at the top of the thread - farther down), but I checked reseller ratings and they had a serious problem with customer service. Therefore, I won't mention the name. Remember, always check reseller ratings before you buy online.

Au revoir.

2 days after Christmas, not much to write. Eagles are going to win tonight and go 12-4. 3rd straight NFC East title. They get a bye week to heal, but it looks like Westbrook may miss the playoffs. Redwolf's Den is still there, but I've been holding my next two updates due to my inability to decide how to approach posting a link to someone I haven't talked to in over 20 years. How would you feel if your name popped up on google with a link to a 26 year old picture?

Oh, yeah, and update to my home networking post. I finally got a replacement for my first Netgear WGR 614. Amazon screwed me on the rebate. It's working, but I can't say I'm totally happy with Netgear right now.

Maybe I can capture some of it over the holiday. Quick update, the pix hit google.

Economics

Matt Miller was on Radio Times today (Nov. 5) when I went to get lunch. I found Matt pretty interesting, and even though the plan outlined in his book sounds to me like it could be the basis for "neo-liberalism," I am intrigued. Then again, several people have already decided what neoliberalism is. Post-liberalism has also been defined (both politically and theologically). Google didn't come up with anything for neopost-liberalism, so there you are. I crown the Two Percent Solution as neopostliberalism! Wait! Maybe it should be postneoliberalism.

Lunch is over. Go to twix.com for dessert. (A high speed connection helps).

Live by the Blog, Die by the Blog

Mickey Kaus sums it up pretty well in Kausfiles (you have to page down to the Oct. 20 entry.) Damn you, Gregg Easterbrook! Talk about biting the hand that feeds you. The problem is that it doesn't feed him, it feeds me and millions (well at least thousands) of thinking football fans everywhere. TMQ has been completely excised from ESPN.com's page 2. (No links - this sux!) A quick search doesn't show me anything to add to Mr. Kaus's review of the sitchiation, so I won't write any more. Except a quick link to a google news search. No telling what it will bring up when you click it.

Web Conferencing

We want to have a meeting over the web. What to do? Here are some things I've looked at:

This web conferencing gude from buyerzone is very interesting. I've requested quotes, we'll see what we get. Webex advertises everywhere. Looks like it's a possibility. Meetingplace looks too expensive. Thinkofit.com has a webconferencing guide, but it's not as nice as buyerzone.

We shall see what happens.

Wireless Networking

Here are some links I've collected in my search for wireless networking info. HomeNetHelp.com is nicely laid out and has some good info, but I have a lot of connection problems. The Anandtech Networking forum has some good info, but the best part for me was the link to ezian.net. Ezian then linked me to a 802.11g performance chart at Wi-Fi Planet. PC Magazine has a product guide for wireless networking. Need to check out reviews on Amazon for anything I might want to buy.

Well, I bought the Netgear stuff, hooked it up, and then couldn't communicate through the wire to the router! Here are some links I found while trying to figure out my problem: Practically Networked Wireless Network Troubleshooting - This JSI FAQ has some interesting stuff, but I don't know if it will help me. I am dreading a call to NetGear tech support. Everything I saw in the Amazon & epinions reviews described the tech support as dreadful. Maybe if my expectations are low enough, I will be pleasantly surprised.

Played around some, it seems like the problem may be dhcp related. I found this thread at Dux Computer Digest. Another link on the AMD site. This techadvice site looks interesting. TCP/IP info on myob.com. Home networking question on computing.net.

Another update. It's been almost a week. Things aren't working right. I can't communicate from my laptop to the router. I can't plug the laptop directly into the modem and use my broadband connection. Hopefully, I can get this cleared up within the next couple of days.

Genomes

All Things Considered had a piece on a partial dog genome. Here is a science update from nature. The whole thing made me think that decoding a mammal genome would be a cool project if I won a huge powerball jackpot. I was thinking maybe a farm animal could provide a lot of data that could be used to improve food production.

    Blogging from Cape May

I'm writing this (at least the beginning) froim the Magic Brain Cyber cafe in Cape May, NJ. It's a beautiful weedend, and my time is almost up, so this will be stream of consciousness for now. Father Collins' homily this morning was about human life, and he mentioned that only human's smile and laugh (I knwo there are animals, too, but later for that). Of course, that brought to mind schadenfreude and the laugh of someone who was doing evil.

There was a lot more, but my consciousness stream, and my time, are running dry. Maybe I will update this later into something that makes sense. Maybe not.

But it's also where you hit the Wordspy link for reefer. I found Wordspy to be captivating. I'm not going to list all the words I looked at, but camgirl led me to an interesting site. 1. Do you like talking on the phone? Why or why not? Yes and no. There are some people I just don't want to talk to. Other than that, I'm okay with it.
    2. Who is the last person you talked to on the phone? A client.
    3. About how many telephones do you have at home? 3 hard wired, 1 cordless, 2 cell
    4. Have you encountered anyone who has really bad phone manners? What happened? Yes - I hung up on them.
    5. Would you rather pick up the phone and call someone or write them an e-mail or a letter? Why or why not? I think that would be situational, wouldn't it? If you want immediate feedback, you use the phone. I suppose you could im, but maybe your question is easier to verbalize than to type. If you want to have a record, you use e-mail or a letter.

    On-line Shopping

Sometimes shopping on-line is a dream - it's convenient, you get a good price and everything is right with the world. Other times it can be Kafka-esque in how difficult it is to find what you want. I've been trying to buy a digital camera for over a month now. I really like the HP Photosmart 850. I would put a link, but I don't have one that I like. The street price is about $500. Amazon occassionally drops the price 5 to 10% as a teaser, but I'm still not ready to spend over $450 for this camera. The other camera I'm considering is the Fuji FinePix 3800. It's a little less camera than the HP PS850, but it's about $150 less to buy. If I had to buy today, I'd probably go with the Fuji. My brother bought the HP, though, and I took a few pictures with it at Christmas. It's a nice camera. Well, we will see what happens.

On the other hand, sometimes you find some cool stuff. Like Startech.com's Comp2VGA signal converter. It lets you take your composite or S-video signal and display it on your VGA monitor. Now you can play your Gamecube or PS2 on a spare monitor! As a special bonus, here is a list of Pricegrabber's video capture cards. The COMP2VGA is near the bottom of the first page for less than $50.

    Workin' the Blog

Just trying to get some info on Pharma MACT equations has led me to a DOE report on Analysis of Strategies for Reducing Multiple Emissions from Electric Power Plants: Sulfur Dioxide, Nitrogen Oxides, Carbon Dioxide, and Mercury and a Renewable Portfolio Standard. Looks like it might be interesting, but it's off topic.
Environmental-Expert.com has more interesting stuff on their site, an Environmental Software House and limited security. What is truly bizarre is that all the stuff in the aforementioned directory is Essential Technologies (ETi) stuff that was posted in November 2002. It still has all the ETi logos and contact info, even though ETi had closed down and been taken over by Environmental Support Solutions. Maybe they just hadn't gotten around to updating the literature yet.

Toby Hanna & Ken Weiss wrote a CEP Magazine article about the MON rule. I should read it sometime. Still can't find anything easy about the calc's (I could read the rule, but that would give me a headache). I found a company that I drive right by several times a week in Flemington, NJ (home of the 1st trial of the 20th century) called EnfoTech. I should stop and see them sometime. I also found an Excel file with all the pharmaceutical companies in the UK. E-mail me (redwolfeighttwo at att.net - only use the digits for the numbers, not the words) if you want a copy.

I finally found an summary on the Pharmaceutical MACT Rule Assistant. They give all the process vent equations in their own little section.
